About Speedway Avenue School
Speedway Avenue School is a Pre-K through 8th-grade elementary school located in Newark’s West Ward, overlooking the beautiful Vailsburg Park.
The original Speedway Elementary School opened in 1917 as a brick building between Dassing and South Orange Avenues. It was built to relieve overcrowding at Alexander Street School. In 1911, students transitioned into a newer Speedway School building, and the original structure was converted into a charter school. Later, in 1910, another Speedway Elementary opened, providing additional relief for West Ward schools experiencing overcrowding. Most recently, in 2010, Speedway was rebuilt to replace the previous building on Speedway Avenue, ensuring modern facilities for future generations of learners.
